Hey You
From reading blogs, I know how common it is for toddlers to assume that their mothers know the name of every random stranger in the neighbourhood. Pie is definitely of that persuasion. "Who’s that?" she asks as we drive home from day-care. My vague answers are apparently satisfactory to her – she has even begun adopting them in her own play. "Bye bye Man!" she called out the front door yesterday, as I was tidying up the supper dishes. I assumed that she was addressing a passer-by, but in fact she had picked up one of her Rescue Heroes and was trying to figure out how to get him out the front door. "He’s going to the doctor," she explained when I came to check.
Bub prefers a more independent approach. Instead of asking for names, he tries to improvise. "Hello Somebody!" he greeted a little boy at the beach the other day. And then this morning, while two workmen were installing our new central air system (pause here to feel my pain – our old unit died in the middle of the latest heat wave), Bub watched through the side screen door, jabbing a finger in the men’s direction from time to time and saying, "You! You!"
"If you want to be friendly, Bub," I admonished, "you should say hello."
He tried that. But then a few minutes later he came up with a better idea. "Hey, Dick! What are you doing?" he called out. "Dick! What are you doing?"
I think maybe it’s time to confiscate this book:

That made me smile. But if you want to laugh until tears roll off your chin and onto your keyboard, read Mimi’s birth story. It starts here and ends here, but the funniest installment for me was this one – more than worthy of an ROFL award for the month of June. For more ROFLs, go here and here.

LOL!
I admit I am kind of stuck at...your kids actually want to be friendly to people they don't know? Wow. Color me impressed. :)
Mine don't even want to be friendly to people they do know. LOL
Hee hee! Your son said Dick! (Juvenile I know but it's funny!)
And hey! Glad to hear your a/c is coming just in the nick of time.
Bub, kid, you crack me up! as much as Mimi was definitely deserving of the ROFL, i'd like to bestow an honourary one on Bub.
Well, this entry certainly warrants an LOL!
Aw, shucks! I'm proud to bursting! Thanks so much! I wondered my my site traffic suddenly exploded today ... now the whole interweb can follow along as I sniff toilet tissue and roll around naked in my hallway. Good time!
And? Dick! Dick! That's FUNNY. I think, all things considered, I'd rather be Somebody!
I never read those books--French school. In the French books, the children are 'Rémi' and 'Aline' which has kind of a resonance for me. The dog, fyi, is 'Fido', and he says 'ouaf, ouaf'.
Oh, Lord! LOL! Kids, God bless 'em.
The Boy does that constantly: "Who dat on the porch?" or "Who man?". He also says it loud enough so that the person can hear. Good times.
Baby, I know that game. We had a cleaning lady with an unpronouncable name. But I realized I needed to figure out how to pronounce it when the 2 year old started calling her "cleaning."
Classic! Stealing the name from a classis is just classic! I hope your AC is up and running again real soon.
Off to read laugh some more...
Scooter will call all kids "Little Kid," even if they're bigger than he is; they don't tend to see the humor in it.
Bub cracks me up!
I hope you've got air now. Ugh.
The May Queen just refers to people as "Boy" and "Girl." For instance, we are at the park, and she'll have been playing with some new kid for a good 20 minutes or so. To get her attention she says "Girl! Girl!" I suggest she find out said gir's name. She does, but then continues to call her "Girl." Ok, then.
The Boy went through a phase of loudly asking about EVERY PASSING PERSON "Who is that guy? Do we know him? Does he live in Canada?". Every. passing. person.
They were funny.
But so are you. :))
That WAS a hilarious post.
And Mme L sounds exactly like Beck's The Boy.
I'm amazed that Dick and Jane has been revamped and relaunched - it has a lot to answer for.
cheers
HA! Hillarious!
When Allie was two we took her to a baseball game. She was in the "Who's dat mom" stage and asked about some man hanging obnoxiously off the upper level. It's just some guy I said. From then on whenever she saw him, she would yell "It's the sun guy, the sun guy!" This carried on to other strange men, in stores or on the street. "Look mom, it's the sun guy" It was so funny, I didn't have the heart to correct her.
It's slang now in our house for someone we don't know...
"Who's on the phone honey?"
"Oh, it's just the sun guy again"
"Hey Dick!" always gets SOMEONE'S attention. That Bub is a smart guy. ;)
My girls need to know the life story of everyone...nothing like their Mom. ;)
Glad your A/C is fixed, that is a good thing. In our house with all our allergies and asthma we cannot live without it.
Fuuny poster :-)
i love it when they do stuff like this...still unencumbered by social rules and whatnot...it's fleeting and slips away as they grow, but for awhile, we can all just be dicks and think nothing of it.
WonderBaby is still sorting out the difference between mommies and daddies and men and ladies - not all of the latter are the former, but most of the ones that she meets ARE the former, so it gets confusing sometimes. Is that MAN a DADDY? Is MAN his name, in the way that Daddy's name is DADDY?
'Dick' would just be easier, I think.
Funny funny kid!
If only I had a book to blame those sort of exclamations on.
Okay, I'm loving the surprise ending and totally giggling like a ten-year-old boy. Did you feel the need to explain?
(And I'm reeeeeally hoping to get A/C next summer. I think it really is getting hotter and stickier. Either that or I'm totally going soft.)
