Dream Home
It’s hard to blog when you’re spending all your time compulsively checking the MLS listings and scanning online floor plans. So I pulled out my grade ten diary and discovered that 21 years ago I was spending most of my time having sleepovers with my friends and planning out my dream home. Here are some excerpts from January 1987:
New Year’s Resolutions:
I, [Bubandpie], resolve on this day, January 1st, 1987, to:
1) Write a story I can be proud of – and hopefully send away.
2) Stop hating people (eg. preppies, snobby Lambeth people).
3) Have more empathy for others.

BFF slept over Saturday night and we talked about:
1) The guys we would go out with – and how much we wanted to go out with them.
2) Going to France for grade thirteen [still three years away, a plan that never materialized].
3) Florida – we’re staying at Disney World for March Break.
4) Social People Scales – the Lambeth SPS, the Byron and Westmount SPS’s, the theatre arts SPS etc. The thing is that everyone is climbing. Shannon, for instance, is dictator of the Lambeth SPS, and Lisa, Patty, Stephanie, and even Carolyn, BFF and I to a lesser (much lesser) extent are all struggling to pull ourselves into her little circle. But Shannon herself is about midway up the Westmount and Byron preppy clique, and struggling to climb that particular ladder. Even the people who are at the top are as anxious as anyone, perhaps more so, because their whole life is built on their social position.
So that’s what we talked about from 8 pm until 2 am. It was a good sleepover.

On New Year’s Eve, Andrea slept over and we planned each other’s futures by saying what we’d be doing five and ten years from now on New Year’s Eve. Andrea’s future is more exciting than mine – she goes to New York and joins a rock band while I get married, become a happy homemaker and raise children. Andrea says she wants her house to be decorated all in white and silver, with pink furniture if necessary, the only spots of colour being large, abstract prints in silver frames – only she doesn’t want a house, she wants a two-story apartment. And three cats. The cats are the only things that humanize it – I wonder if they have to be white as well.

BFF and I decided that it would be worthwhile to go out with someone we only like in order to have a boyfriend. I wouldn’t advise extending that philosophy into marriage though.

Felicia and I planned out our dream homes tonight. They are less dreamy than they might be, in that we’ve stuck to the plain and ordinary with a few innovations (attic bedrooms, several fireplaces, a nursery), but I like it better that way.
First floor:
Kitchen – blue and yellow
Dining room – red with dark wood
Family room – orange and teal green (fireplace)
Living room – rose and grey (fireplace)
Second floor:
Master bedroom – peach and cream (fireplace)
2 children’s bedrooms – pink / white, red, blue
Nursery – yellow and white
Basement:
Rec room – red with dark wood
2 studies
As I recall, the exterior of this house looked almost exactly like this:
It's a good thing I was sticking to the "plain and ordinary," don't you think?

I think that no matter what it looks like, you're living in a dream home.
Happy new year.
I agree that it isn't wise to extend that philosophy through marriage. How true, and clever.
Did you really write like that while you were still in school? Yes, that house could really use a few extra touches. Very plain and ordinary. Very cute post.
Good luck with finding your dream home; I fully know how addictive scanning the online house lists can be!
Isn't it fun to find stuff like this? It cracks me up to read my old journals. Some of it is *quite* embarrassing, though...
Wow. Your diary is much more interesting than mine were. Mine were filled with complaining, anxiety and angst.
Love the dream house. Are you implementing those rooms into your new home?
that's pretty funny, b&p!
I love when you pull out your old diary entries. I feel like I am reading myself at those ages.
Happy New Year!!
I'm glad to see that someone else was planning their dream home (in exhausting detail at that age), too. I had mine very well thought out. It also included many, many fireplaces and....an elevator. So much for keeping it small.
I think the dreams and yearnings of other people, particularly in different stages of their lives, are riveting.
Love all the fireplaces.
As I recall, I did a dream home hwen I was a bit younger than that (10?). It had a theme park inside, with a roller coaster.
Happy New Year!
Cyndi - They're all real excerpts - but the stuff I left out is considerably more embarrassing, either because it's too wordy, too heartfelt and idealistic, or too smugly superior.
That was fun.
And Happy New Year to you too.
So, these many years later, have you successfully stopped hatin' on preppies and those unfortunate Lambeth people? Or was this just an 80's thing?
Oh, more diary entries please. I always laugh so hard trying to picture you at that age, and trying to figure out if your writing and thinking then is so earnest as it sounds, or ... maybe sly. Don't know! Need more!
Ohhh, now I am kind of loving that rose & gray. Heck. I want your dream house oh oh oh oh! And a pink corvette! And a boyfriend named Ken, except I want all of his bits to be anatomically, you know, anatomical.
Melanie - That's what I found so striking about that list - I never think of myself as hating people now. That's either because (a) I'm more mature, (b) I am not stuck in high school with hateful people, or (c) I've gotten better at sublimating my negative emotions.
Mimi - That's the horrible part - the stuff I'm too embarrassed to publish on my blog is so much MORE earnest than that. I think it's safe to say that any irony is supplied wholly by the reader.
the whole social ladder thing is very aware, i think, for a high schooler. not that I'm surprised that you would be very aware.
Hey B&P, Your post was very funny. I can't help wondering if all those rooms are from one house or several. If they are from one house, perhaps you have found your home.
It is pretty cool to me that you have accomplished all your New Year's resolutions even if it took adult maturity to do it.
Continued good luck with the house hunting!
I'm somewhat fascinated by your detailed social analysis and then in the next breath your admission that you are trying hard to get to the top of what you obviously see as an artificial construct.
It's like you were smart enough to see that it was just a game, and decided to play it anyway.
I'm probably fascinated because my reaction in high school was to avoid the game altogether as beneath my notice. The snobbery of nerds I suppose. :)
seems like 2 and 3 were relatively the same - but you had me at "I, (bub and pie). so official and earnest, that.
Carrien - I absolutely did see the game for what it was but remained enmeshed in it anyway. But not so much in an effort to get to the top - more like desperately treading water so as not to sucked under.
Merle - Definitely different houses - at least, I assume that's what happens when you create a dream home by randomly googling phrases like "orange family room" and "yellow kitchen."
orange and teal green?!
Why would pink furniture ever be necessary?
Gwen - That made me laugh and laugh. I did wonder whether the "if necessary" attached to "pink" or "furniture." Perhaps the idea was to try to go entirely without furniture, throwing in a pink chair or two if necessary?
Well, you're raising kids... is Andrea in a rock band in NYC?
I believe you are the only person *ever* to make me wish I had kept a diary.
But only a little bit.
I don't think my high school had a social register. Maybe we were too blue collar.
That kind of 'plain and ordinary' house goes for millions 'round these parts!
Obsessive online house hunting, I have been there! Good luck to you - I hope that you do find that dream house. With the right amount of charm, and a dash of cupboard/cabinet space.
When I was a kid, I dreamed of living in a house with stairs in it. Now...I'm pretty sure I was crazy for wanting that. Except for the buns of steel it might produce, I have no more desire for the house I thought I wanted back then.
Are you still in contact w/ BFF?
I never got into quite that much detail in color schemes when envisioning my dream home. I was more about planning out the secret passages and doors hidden in bookcases.
It was fun to read these bits of a younger you.
I am an obsessive lover of floor plans too. Even when I'm not house hunting.
I don't think I ever gave such thought to my dream home. So could you actually live in the house now that you dreamed up?
This makes me wish I kept my diaries a little. As for my dream house, lots of bathrooms, fireplaces and rotating closets.
Elizabeth - Oh yes - she's even on my blogroll! I even went so far as to marry the BFF of her husband. That second F really does mean forever.
That is SO COOL! I have a BFF now, but we didn't know each other until 19 years ago. My BFF from HS, I've lost touch with. Unfortunately the F didn't mean fOREVER.
Your SPS scales remind me of a John Hughes movie.
I would have been impressed if your friend described the pink furniture as "pops of colour". Methinks I watch too much HGtv..
What a fantastically articulate teenager you were.
Lambeth was snobby back then too?
(i joke, since my Mom still lives and works there...although since London has taken it over it certainly does not have that little town feeling anymore.)
Your diary is a sign that you were meant to write..mine is full of stuff like..."I am a rock..I am a wall.."
Hope the house hunting is going well...

I love that a kid's dream home is based on color. I search the MLS every day, and I don't even have plans to move - ever. I would attend open houses every day if I could.
Love this. I've always loved looking at houses. When I was 10, my friend's mother used to take us to look at model homes every Saturday. I LOVED it.
I love these clues into your former self. Brilliant.
And your friend's New York apartment sounds like Joe's dream home, sans pink furniture.
I may add those resolutions to my 2008 list...
I would love to find my old journals, but I doubt that they are as interesting as yours!
Oh my, you brave girl. You made me laugh out loud. I love your true insights into the social ladder conundrum.
I remember that I had a friend who wanted to have nothing to do with any kind of routine when she grew up. We used to argue about it. "But what about brushing your teeth?" "Having a cup of tea in the afternoon?" I've always been a sucker for routine.
This is so great. I cringe when I even think about pulling out any of my own diaries.
This is a great idea. I'm home-searching too and have been meaning to destroy my old journals. Maybe I'll share some before I do...
Hey, my dining room is orange and teal green.
I love reading your diary posts. I'm always amazed at how aware you are of everything - the social construct and your own personality and self.
