Flooring Dilemma

It's floor-picking time. Here's the floor (and cabinetry and countertop) for our ensuite bathroom:

And here's our kitchen floor and cabinets (the floor is cork):

I found a good deal on this hardwood (5" planks, hand-scraped engineered maple), but I'm worried that it's too orange with the red walls:

Do you think it looks better with Chocolate Fondue?

I love the floors and do think the chocolate looks better. If you love that red, could you pick a similar shade that would go better with the floors? I don't know enough about color to suggest a different shade of red, but I have a friend who is an Interior decorating buff and she always say you can and should hire a dsigner for a couple of hours just to help you with color selections. P.S. I love your blog!! JE in CO, US

Could you do the walls in both red and brown? My sister's walls alternate colors throughout her living spaces and the effect is really warm and inviting.

I think either color will be fine. Remember that your furnishings and accents can tone down and orange that you are seeing. Also area rugs can pull out the brown tones.

Your home is sure to be gorgeous! You honestly have taste that is identical to my own (which means really good, of course!).
I can't wait to see how it all comes together!

I prefer the red with the floor.

Honestly, I've always thought that wood is a neutral.

red. mmmm red. I love red. And I agree with the wood-as-neutral thing- while you do have to be a little careful, I think it's very forgiving.

Ooh - you have such a similar style to mine - I love all your colours (I also note that today I also own five out of six books that popped up on your Library Thing widget). But I digress...

I think that it is possible for wood flooring to clash with wall colours. We had flooring in our new house refinished because the colour was wayyyyy too orange to match our furnishings and taste. That said, I love the brown wall colour. I tend to want more neutrals on the wall and then to change my mind by using accents. That way when I get bored with red (which I inevitably do) I don't have to repaint.

Good luck (oh, and I LOVE the ensuite selections. Very much our plans when we start making changes around here).

i love the red. and if i'm understanding correctly, this is for the bathroom and the cabinets are the rich, dark shade in the top photo...?

i think the three will blend together without making an otherwise altogether too-dark room.

I'm no huge fan of red, but for some reason I think it looks great against the floor. So does the chocolate mind you so I guess I am not much help.

I like the chocolate better. In fact, it's nearly the same colour that I'm painting our bathroom right now. I wonder if it will shrink the room too much though with the colour being so dark?

ACK! I love everything! Building a new house is so much fun. Wandering around in it when it's brand spanking new and exactly how you want is even better.

Red, definitely. And, no, it's not too much. It's a great complement.

It is too red for the red walls. You need to ditch the flooring and choose a different one. The red is too awesome to change.

Maybe you need to pick a red with more orange than purple? I think it's easier to adjust paint than flooring...

I think I like the suggestion of one wall each color. It might temper it a bit.

I think the red looks great, but if you want something warmer, take a look at Behr's Antique Red (Benjamin Moore can match it).

Thank God it is you and not me. I hate making those kinds of decisions.

One comfort is that you can always change paint color so choose the floor that you like the best.

I like them both, but I think the red looks great. It seems like your audience is split down the middle!

I like the red very much. VERY VERY MUCH.

cork floors - I am swooning.
I think there is another brown that will work better. I have to go to my guy in the little italy benjamin moore and he just picks for me. sorry I am no help.

Red. That's my vote. For what it's worth, which isn't much.

Yes, I like the brown better.

I like the red, too, although I had a room with red walls at one time and I got tired of it very quickly. The walls I painted chocolate are still going strong.

You're going to love the cork flooring. My girlfriend has it in her house and it rocks.

I prefer the red. I like the warmth and the zing. I think that the brown dulls it down a bit but that being said, it's not necessarily bad to be dulled down a bit if you're not looking for a lot of zing.

Here's a belated vote for chocolate and a shout out for the cork flooring choice.
